The Last Supper - Not a Meal anymore

The Last Supper  is a late 15th-century mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. It is one of the world's most recognizable paintings.

While many of us would consider this as depiction of a meal the night before the Agony, few would deem to consider the angst of the chosen twelve, as they look around to know who is being referred to.

Their facial expressions, their body language exposes them all.
And yet they claimed to be his followers and the chosen ones.

And while they were eating, he said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me." They were deeply grieved and began to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”
Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table.
I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the Scripture: 'The one who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.'

After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, "Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me." The disciples began to look at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant.

Do the words spoken then seem relevant today.

Was it intentionally vague, as if to arouse in us who hear them today, to a self-questioning.

Have we shared in the very guilt of the Traitor, and yielded to tendencies we have in common with him, which are dragging us down.

Have we joined him in his murmuring, and are about to renew this quarrel, about Precedence, Power & Position.

Are we all ego ridden, that we will not let another gain over us and our ideas.

It is well that the abyss should be laid bare before our eyes, and that each should ask himself whether he were indeed on the point of falling into it.

Having read the above, stare at the painting once again with a New Vision. Do you now think it was just about a meal shared.

If we are truthful to ourself, we do react and behave like each of the disciples reaction. Including Judas.

Thought provoking and reveals rare insights into an event we had grown to consider as just a starter to the main course.

I feel everyone around has betrayed someone or even oneself at times....we are not perfect but the lesson is repentance and acceptance of one's faults will lift oneself from the guilt, burden and suffering of the things done or said.

Leonardo da vinci was the ultimate artist. His creations always make the beholder to look deeper for the hidden message. Here he is making me take judas' place at the table. I have betrayed the Lord.

Agreed very much to your insights of the thoughts that went into my mind .I did remember this aspect bought out vividly by you that Jesus is sending us every human soul many messages to reflect on and find all the shortcomings we face in our lives. We only live and are greedy for all the worldly possessions but fail to understand our true home is elsewhere. This reflection is valid even today at all levels.

Amazing perspective. Its always good to see a story through many lenses to have a better understanding. Every Lent we repent, give up something we like, follow christ in prayers. Post lent we switch back to normal. We have all shared the guilt with Judas, its just a matter of realisation. It is time we repent, learn and do not repeat our mistakes.

Very insightful. It has made me revisit an image taken for granted or remembered at the start of a meal. Am i a traitor?? Am i a hypocrite? Am i a deserter to a friend? Am i apathetic? A new perspective and a chance to repent everytime my gaze falls on the Last Supper.

Well written Roy!
The painter had his own interpretation of the last Super- beautiful painting.

Sometimes I wonder why was Judas allowed to come to the last when Jesus knew he was the betrayer...
We are guilty of crime similar to Judas- betraying Jesus in our every day lives.
